Juneteenth celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when enslaved people located in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from the slavery system in the United States. Freedom was already granted but this is the day when everyone was actually freed. It's important to celebrate this holiday especially nowadays when it feels like racism is praised and rewarded. Things are bleak which is why we celebrate our wins to remind us that things can get better and that we have made so much progress. Yes we still have a long way to go but things can and will get better if we keep fighting for it. So take today to celebrate Juneteenth. Take 10 minutes out of your day to research some more about Juneteenth. If you have the means go donate to a charity that supports black people. Go make art. Go support and get involved with your local community. Do whatever you want to support the holiday just remember that you can make a positive impact and even if it's small it still matters. Happy Juneteenth!
